Reading one of your books is like sitting down with an old friend whom I have not seen in a while, just being together, enjoying good conversation. Thank you for your honesty and thoughtfulness in the topics you explore. I share your books with others and have given various titles to family, friends, and skeptics. I do this in the hope that each one will be blessed and encouraged, as I have been, to know they are not alone. The new book does not disappoint. I am reading it slowly, allowing myself to digest each chapter before going on to the next. I look forward to the memoir!

I have just finished reading ‘What on Earth Are We Missing?’ I am just starting to ready ‘What Good is God?’ I am trying to read all your books because I love the way you write. I love the way you make me think about being a Christian. A lot of times I feel guilty because of things I think and say and do, but after reading your books I realize that I am not alone in what I am doing. My life is a lot easier than the people you write about and I realize that should be on my knees every night thanking God for the life that I live, even though sometimes I ask God, “Why me?” But I now realize that I have it so much better than other people. Thanks again for your books, please don’t stop writing them because you make me think about the way I live my life for God more than any other writer. May God bless you.

You say that Christianity and Europe have been through a “divorce.” That’s certainly true with regards to church attendance. But isn’t the danger in such a statement that you can discourage those who do still call themselves Christians in Europe? I have heard so many Christian writers bemoaning how Christianity is dead in Europe. But it seems to me that (1) We have to engage what has turned Europeans away from Christianity, i.e. State Funded Churches with reactionary and illogical social stances (2) To say that Christianity is dead in Europe can become a fatalism that the Gospel warns us against. Do we not trust the Holy Spirit to move?

I’m not singling out you in particular. Honestly, I think if there were more Philip Yancey’s in the West speaking up Christianity would be in a much better place. I just don’t think Christians should regard Europe as a place of hostility.
