[…] Will was ordained in a rural Mississippi Baptist church, went to Tulane University, then Yale Divinity School. His reconciliation work led him to frame a painful and deeply profound narrative of grace. He wrote 15+ books, co-founded the Katallagete magazine and was the author (or subject) of countless articles. Like an eccentric Forrest Gump, he seemed to be everywhere during a critical era of history. He (and his hat) inspired cartoonist Doug Marlette’s character Will B. Dunn. […]

The only way I can understand what happened to Sara Miles (see the previous posting) is by seeing that as an example of grace. Some of you will be interested to know, and others will be put off to know, that Sara is a lesbian with a “bastard” child (her word, on p. 175 of Take This Bread, and used literally rather than figuratively as Campbell did). It was because of her “radical conversion” that she started a highly successful “food pantry” at her church. It was also a few years later that she and her partner were legally married (partly at the insistence of her daughter Katie) when that was possible in California.

Thank you Philip. Very much enjoyed learning about Campbell.
I'm still surprised by grace, how far it's willing to go.
And I continue to appreciate and learn from your writing style and technique.

Thanks for this, Philip. To my shame, I hadn't heard of Preacher Will until I read his obituary in the New York Times earlier this week; I think I would have been challenged by him.

And as someone who was conceived out of wedlock by an executive and his secretary, and then put up for adoption, I'm tempted to appropriate his 10-word summary of the gospel. (Although I may bowlderize it depending upon the audience.)

Given your church background, I imagine there are a number of reactions percolating to the surface. Perhaps some more will appear here.

Thanks again.

I 2 have had a revelation from God on His Grace much like others, I hope! I have befriended a fellow human being that has not reached the point of receiving God's Grace, but I just know he will some day, soon. Not all Christians will understand how I could be a friend with such a "pervert," who happens not to follow Christ at this time in his life, but is a practicing pervert. You can let your imagination be your guide, but all intent & purposes, I'm not being specific to his lifestyle choices.

In God Most Gracious Grace,
