Sheehan, in his book God, Symmetry, and Time argues that God created time in the first day of creation and the implications are huge. Challenging issues like predestination vanish from God’s perspective outside of time. And I wonder if my wife, who died suddenly about 15 months ago, is also outside of time. Perhaps from her perspective I am with her in eternity?

I have just read Francis S Collins, ‘The Language of God’. This has helped me to understand better the timelessness of God and strengthened my faith in God. This post speaks to me in the same way and I am in awe of God, and of the wonderful gift of Christ. During this Lenten season, we pray that one day, when He returns, we will behold Him as He truly is!

I think about this often, God sitting outside of time and therefore seeing all of human history as “now”. It really helps me see prayer as an act of faith in the face of what, to us, is an uncertain future.

We don’t pray for things that have passed, because that takes no faith – we know how it went. But the future – that is “now” to God and is not unknown to Him. Every prayer request is a statement of belief in the timeless nature of God and His ability to act on that divine perspective.

Wow! I was just thinking about this the other day. I saw a video of Neil deGrasse Tyson explaining that the photons of light that travel from the sun to land here on earth go so fast (the speed of light, I think) that they “experience” it as if it were the exact same moment. Leaving the sun, traveling 93 million miles through space, and landing on our skin is all happening at the same time, basically. God truly is amazing!

Phillip…I love you and I love your books! Thank you for always asking deep, thoughtful questions while providing maybe a glimpse into some of the possible answers. I take somewhat of a risk here with you and your readers, but would like to share something from my Christian faith tradition for consideration, as I believe it answers most of the questions you’ve asked…

These are a few verses from a restored book of scripture we call “The Pearl of Great Price,” and is basically a conversation between Moses and God…
“And God spoke unto Moses saying: Behold, I am the Lord God almighty, and Endless is my name; for I am without beginning of days or end of years; and is not this endless?
“…for all my works are without end, and also my words, for they never cease.
“Mine Only Begotten is and shall be the Savior, for He is full of grace and truth; but there is no other God beside me, and all things are present unto me, for I know them all.”

Of course, we cannot understand eternity, but the Father tells us He is eternal…no beginning and no end. He tells us here that Jesus was chosen as the Savior even before this earth was created.
He tells us that ALL things…even time…are “present” unto Him. For me, time as we know it doesn’t exist for God.
So many answers is just three verses!
