I know exactly what you mean! I am from a Hindu family, but I do believe in Jesus, as the way to God, it’s difficult, since no one in my family, friends, colleagues or even college friends believe in Christ. Being only 19 there’s not much I can do, I have no church as well except online groups but I don’t know anyone personally there either.
Reading about Mr. Yancey’s account has shocked me and sadden me.

Dear Philip, I enjoy reading your books and when I saw this post I was so very excited! Thank you for sharing about your trip to India and especially CMC, Vellore. I was there in December 2013 and actually visited the house of Ida Scudder. I’ve blogged about your book or rather this post and linked to it from my blog too. “I made my fourth trip to this land of endless fascination in August. I’d been asked to give the Ida Scudder Humanitarian Oration (a fancy word for a speech) at the Christian Medical College in Vellore in honor of Dr. Paul Brand, with whom I wrote three books.” I read Philip Yancey’s latest blog post “Darkness and Light in India” utterly fascinated; its been less than a year since I was at Paul Brand’s chapel in Karigir and Dr. Ida Scudder’s home in Vellore. Besides, Yancey is one of my favorite contemporary Christian writers (Soul Survivor is my personal favorite). Yancey’s Jesus is the Jesus I know and love, a humble God-man who changes us and our life, our world. Yancey’s descriptions and arguments about how Western Christianity had misunderstood Jesus core message resonated with my own lived experience in the West. I have not read your article. I just came here because God has impressed upon my heart to pray for you, and to let you know that I am. It occurred to me that your heart must be so broken at times, and your mind must be so tormented at times with all you have witnessed. I am almost finished with your book “Prayer. Does it Make any Difference?” You have enriched my life very deeply. I have been walking with God for 28 years and I now sense God’s presence more fully than ever before. Thank you so much for your visit to CMC. I thank you for your writings which have changed my life to the better. How can any article on suffering and healing in India not mention Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity is beyond me, wether you visited Calcutta or not. Her impact on the lives of Indians throughout India and the World is well documented. But not here.

You may remember that after the oration you autographed a copy of “The Gift of Pain” which was signed and presented to me by Dr. Paul Brand in 2000. I was saddened to read of your experience in Odisha and do not believe you had any ulterior motive. I feel we have all fallen short in terms of God’s love and lack sensitivity in not being shocked at the brutalisation of God’s creation. God bless you as you report reality with a heavenly perspective.

Dear Mr. Yancey,

While I respect your beliefs, I must take exception to the line in your blog “Not only in India, but in many parts of the world Christians are in the line of fire. ” I do not think you should base your impression on the happenings in Odhisa, unfortunate as they were. Christians are well regarded in our country and are far from threatened. Did you ask any of those whom you met in CMC if they felt threatened?

As a graduate of CMC, Vellore, I have seen the best and the worst in Christianity, the worst being narrow-mindedness and a scorn for non-Christian Indians. Please assure me that you don’t belong to the second set.
