Thanks again Philip for a tremendous blog article! A very interesting childhood you had... I plan to read this to my parents this Christmas. They are 87 & 82 and left Ukraine (from a German communal village that no longer exists south of Kiev & the Dnipropetrovsk River) towards the end of the war and snuck through Poland into Germany. Once there they eventually made arrangements with the Lutheran church to immigrate to southern Alberta, Canada. My grandfather was shot by Stalin, who didn't trust anyone, in 1939 - papers were made available in Moscow after Gorbachev's glasnost. Always wanted to take my folks to re-visit the area, but did't happen. Regards and Blessings...Jake

You're very kind. At this point, however, I'm so far behind on my own deadlines that I dare not think of mentoring or coaching someone else. That usually works best if you find someone (or a group) nearby. --Philip

Philip,

I thank you and I thank God for your gifts, your books and your writings.

Thank you for doing what you do and using what God gave you to inspire and encourage us as a minority believers. I am glad that your writings have always managed to beat some sense of gratitude and wake-up call into me. Reading your writings have also inspired me to take up writing in the faith too (I hope you will consider it a greatest compliment that I have had people commented that some of my writings reminded them of you).

If I may be so bold to ask a question, have you ever thought about mentoring / coaching someone in writing? Would you ever consider taking someone under your wing to mentor as a budding writer?

Thank you for reading my comment.

Mr. Yancey, I am a disabled ex-elder of a conservative, evangelical church. My condition can be extremely painful, lasting many hours. A week ago, it had me historical for over eight hours. I had cried out to God for help, but silence. I started to think seriously of suicide, but decided i couldn’t hurt my wife of 42 years like that . The next day, I remembered your book Disappointment With God. It had helped me immensely and I wanted you to know. Would love to talk to you sometime, if possible. God bless you and your gift!!!

Great article. The American church needs to read it.

I'd only correct one thing. Babi Yar certainly was not the first mass killing. The SS started shooting masses of people the day they invaded the USSR. It was like a wave that followed the invading German troops. By the time they reached Kiev, they had ready murdered tens of thousands. Kiev was the largest city so the numbers murdered made it the biggest.

Oh Philip, my heart aches reading your account of suppression and tragedy and death in these countries. I have supported a lady missionary to Albania and Romania and she has told me similar stories. Your books and monthly letters, and blog and personal emails are my encouragement to look farther and hope deeper, I will not be delayed from the work of sharing the Gospel by anything short of death. I re-read one or more of your books often and have then inches from my chair at home. You personally reside in a very special place in my heart Philip so I honor you and Janet as family, even in your absence. Thank you again and again for your burden and your devotion to obey God's calling on your life, it has changed so many of us. Steve

Thank you, Philip, for sharing your journey and the inspiring and challenging accounts of grace, suffering, and faith.
The suffering of our Christian brothers and sisters over the ages challenges me as a comfortable middle-class North American Christian basking in our relative ease, luxuries, and freedom. Please keep us reminded of these stories so that, as we enjoy our physical blessings, we remember to share our faith and our wealth.
