When I was young I found a book, Bridge Over the River Kwai, on the shelf in my grandmother’s cottage and took it home to read. As I sat under the little window in the corner of my bedroom in Ann Arbor, in a corner behind one the beds, I read this true story. As Ernest Gordon explained the transformation in his life, he quoted a verse from a letter of John, 1 John 4:20. “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For the person who does not love his brother he has seen cannot love the God he has not seen.”

Even though I did not come from a Christian family, this tiny bit of truth embedded in my heart and mind and at that early age it became a guiding principle for my life, even though I didn’t really know God. I decided I would try to love other people no matter who they were, because I knew I wanted to love God. It made me curious and courageous in meeting other people—in my desire to see God.

one of my closest friends was the producer of the film, sacrificing just about everything to bring the story to the screen. he tells me that earnest gordon did, in fact, get a screening of the film before it was released and that his words afterward, through misty eyes were something like, “well done. you really captured it.”

what an inspiration this story has been to me ever since seeing the film and then reading the book.

Every time I read about the Prison Camp at Kwai River, I feel ashamed to be a Japanese. Cannot watch the movie to the end.

Philip, you wrote an amazing response to one of my family’s very favorite books. Years ago, reading “Miracle on the River Kwai” changed my response to times of suffering and pain for me. I realized I needed to respond to what our Lord himself did before and during the cross…show even more love…think of others…serve as you can…pray for others….keep loving and trusting the Father. I learn this, and then relearn…life is a pilgrimage into the Kingdom of God.
