My Ukrainian friend’s entire CIVILIAN family died all around her while she was begging them to “hold on until help arrives,” after that animal had her house (and the neighborhood elementary school & hospitals, playgrounds and BABIES killed on purpose.)
That’s what the “price” of a war she never asked for (and COULDN’T happen in the United States) has done to her.
Her name is Svitlana, pronounced Svet-lana

Another friend of mine lost her entire family after a bomb was deliberately dropped on her house: they were all buried under the rubble and everyone except she and her mother died. She said she felt (in her body) how each of her 2 children died; they were 21 & 14 (her son was 14.) Her husband, 90-y.o grandma & daughter’s fiancé died too.
I haven’t been able to stop crying about this. Her daughter was going to get married this year and was really happy about it. She couldn’t wait for it to happen.
I also know a man whose wife and 3-month old baby were killed by a bomb aimed at more civilians. He sent around a picture of mother with baby. He wants everyone to know what the red monster is willing to do just to get his own way.
My friend, who lost her family, is named Svitlana Z. Pronounced like Svetlana but spelled with an i.

I have been re-reading your book, Vanishing Grace, in which you describe the secluded life of a writer (an “artist”) and your moments of doubt about spending hours clicking on a keyboard instead of in the trenches with the “activists.” You write, “I feel a disconnect between what I write about in seclusion and the ways in which others apply those words in the real world.” The letter from Ukraine, with its heartbreaking stories of atrocity and inhumanity, also reveals the importance of your work. And, God made sure that this particular book, The Question that Never Goes Away, was written and available now — in 2022, in translation, and where it’s sorely needed.

As I read this, I was also thinking of Middle Eastern refugees and some ministries that serve them. Is Questions That Never Go Away translated into Farsi? (Amazon search yielded nothing.)

After decades of chronic pain from the ravages of Rheumatoid Arthritis, I finally wrote my story in “ Cutting and Pasting Truth”, published just this year. In it I share about my failing, fault-finding, floundering fight with God as I searched, and found over and over, His Truth within my suffering. I believe passionately in the deeper healing of story. Mine are funny, raw, and real. God has turned them into a healing balm for me and many others. In my brokenness I found purpose.
So now I’m on a 6 week stint of recovery from shoulder replacement. In front me is a stack of your books, several I’ve already read, which are reinforcing what I know to be true – Suffering is redemptive, brings community, and has purpose. Its powerful and holy Truth is found in Story. Jesus is the Word, gave us the Word, and we share the Word. Thank you for being the warrior, “I write for my King” (Psalm 45:1).
