I appreciate this piece of history Philip but I think the United States has lost its way as a country that preaches moral issues. I come from a country your country has sanctioned and it hurts tk say it has caused pain suffering to millions of our people. Next time please preach Gorbachev to your leaders perhaps they may see how they have turned away from God. To think of it in Ukraine they are not preaching peace but war.

When I was a child, I have seen my dad and his friends praying earnestly for Russia and the then Russian President Gorbachev. I never knew what exactly happened in Russia during those days. It’s so amazing to read this very encouraging part of history through your blog. Our God answers prayer. Now we are praying for Russia and Ukraine, waiting in hope that God will intervene. I am sure He will.

I agree wholeheartedly with this quote “In our study of scientific atheism, we were taught that religion divides people. Now we see the opposite: love for God can only unite. Somehow we must learn to put together the missionary role—absolutely critical for us now—and also learn from Marx that man can’t appreciate life if he is hungry.” To say that any economic system is utopian is false. To say poverty does not inhibit people from doing their best is also false. It is a solid Christian population that follows God and shares each other’s burdens and is always going to work despite politics.

In reply to cheryl trumble. The very recent turn of events in Russia is too recent to have a sober analysis. The Atlantic magazine is an excellent source. Try "Opening the Red Door," by John Bernbaum, who will be my coauthor, for insight into some of the U-turn changes in Russia.

I had a copy of your book in my library which I read and it has given me a taste for “more” so I anticipate eagerly your forthcoming book to put all this mayhem into focus for us as Christians in today’s upside down world. What would you recommend reading in the meantime to give a perspective on what has and is happening in Russia? I am historical illiterate for sure.

Thanks for sharing this happening in your life. It is amazing what God has done and can do. I especially appreciated this post, because the morning I received it I had just texted my daughter a photo of her at 13 with a child who was 10 and had come to stay with us for two weeks with her maternal grandmother. They were part of an arts school group from Tblisi in what became the republic of Georgia. Our daughter had visited their school the year before the Wall fell with a singing group called the Backyard Gang. My daughter asked me what the child’s last name was.
I told her it was Shevadnarze. Her first name was Sophia. My daughter researched and found what the child is doing today in her 40’s. Amazing. The Backyard Gang performed a musical teaching how God can help with alcohol and drug addiction.
It will be amazing what God will do with your book. God is able to do more…

A great read, as always, Philip. I find the idea of current American evangelicals, most of whom apparently support Trump, offering spiritual and moral guidance to another country a bit unlikely. Perhaps it was different then.
